Future iPads May Be Controlled by User's Gestures

CUPERTINO, Calif. — A future version of Apple’s iPad may contain gesturing-based technology that will allow the user to use hand gestures and movements to manipulate and control graphical elements of the iPad.

Apple submitted a patent application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, revealing that future iPads may be manipulated by a user’s gestures, PatentlyApple.com reported.

By using various gestures such as sliding, swiping, rotating, dragging and others could be used to affect elements like cursors, icons, media files, lists, text, images and more. A single gesture could be performed with one or more hands, by one or more users, or in any combination.

Other gestures could take on different forms such as a geometric pattern (circle, square, triangle), a symbol (check or question mark), letters or a combination of these.

Gesturing would work through the iPads’s front-facing camera.

The patent also included an advanced gesturing-based video editing toolbar, which would provide fixed options for starters but also gesture customization for the more advanced user.
